Past and current research shows that there is a connection between the environment – where people work, live, and play – and health. The purpose of the PhotoVoice portion of this project is to learn more about perceptions of the environment across diverse neighborhoods in West Baltimore.
Who Is Eligible to Participate?
People who are aged 18 years and older, currently live in focal West Baltimore neighborhoods, and can speak and read English.
How Will Persons Participate?
Each person who is eligible and agrees to take part will attend an information session and be given a digital camera with instructions and practice time. Each person will be asked to take at least 10 and up to 25 photos keeping track of where each photo was taken. After one week each participant will meet with a study staff member for a photo selection meeting. Each participant will choose up to 10 photos and provide a written and/or audiorecorded description of each photo. Each participant will receive an incremental monetary incentive ($15 and $25) for each PhotoVoice session. Study staff will develop and return copies to each participant at a “show and tell” meeting one week after photo selection. The entire Photovoice process takes place over a two-week period.
