Would you like to do citizen science in your classroom? Looking for materials to engage your students in real life science?
Hello Teachers and Educators in the Baltimore City Area!
You and your students are invited to participate in a research study as a part of the citizen science initiative though the CNH Baltimore City Amenities and Disamenities Project. This project seeks to investigate individuals’ understanding, reasoning, and perception of science and scientific research. This project also hopes to encourage students within the Baltimore City School District to participate in science and strive for careers involving science. The National Science Foundation has funded this project with the hope to engage students and local citizens in target pest species remediation and improving their scientific literacy. You and your students’ participation in this project will last for approximately 3 months.

What does participation look like?
Participation in the study will involve the following: students will take two surveys (one pre and one post), lead students in ten lesson plans, and sending back the surveys and review worksheet. Your students will be asked 68 questions about science, nature, frequency of participation in school, and how they feel about the environment in each survey. The surveys that the students will take are intended to help identify current level of interest in science among young students. The lesson plans and activities we have developed are focused on nature, mosquitoes, and science. These activities are designed to engage the students while providing encouragement for learning about their natural surroundings. Students will not be critiqued or graded in any way on their participation in these activities. These activities use different teaching styles as a part of our experimental procedure. As part of this project, we ask that students have their parents or guardians sign a consent form for us to use the surveys they take as a part of our research. Any data that we collect will remain anonymous and we will never reveal or know the identity of any of the students participants. Some school districts may require a counselor or administrator to look over our survey and consent form before you can use them in the class. If this is the case for your school we will be happy to send that information along to your for approval.

By having your students participate in our program they have the opportunity to earn a Mosquito Stoppers Citizen Science Certificate!
